ONTARIO — The Southeast Area Commission on Transportation will meet Thursday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (10 a.m. to noon Pacific Standard Time). The meeting will be at the ODOT District 14 office, 1390 SE First Ave., Ontario.

The meeting is open to the public and time will be set aside for public comments. A virtual attendance option will be available via Microsoft Teams. The link to join is included in the meeting agenda, which includes updates on state, county, and city transportation projects, as well as other regional transportation topics.

The Southeast Area Commission on Transportation is composed of community leaders and other partners from Malheur, Grant and Harney counties, plus representatives from the Burns-Paiute Tribes.

If a claimant owns 10 or fewer non-closed claims/sites on Federal land nationwide, the claimant may qualify for a maintenance fee payment waiver, also known as the small miner’s waiver. Form 3830-002 must be used when filing a small miner’s waiver request and must be filed or postmarked (if mailed) on or before September 1 every year. There is no processing fee to file a waiver. By filing a waiver, claimants are certifying that they and all related parties own 10 or fewer claims and sites nationwide, that assessment work (see requirements below) has been or will be performed, and that the proper affidavits of assessment or annual labor will be timely filed.

The small miner’s waiver can be filed in person at your BLM state office or sent via mail. If a claimant owns claims or sites in multiple states, a fee or waiver must be paid or filed in each state where each claim or site is located. Failure to timely pay the fee or file the waiver in the proper BLM office will subject your claims or sites to forfeiture by law.

You Can Find Your Own Gold This Summer with Adventure.

Presentation by Tom Bohmker, 70+ years of chasing, and finding gold. Gold prospector, underground miner, small mind consultant, mining historian, author, and lecturer. Tom caught gold fever at 7 years of age when his family visited a friend’s gold mine in Nevada. After college he found employment as an underground miner, mill operator, millwright, and mining technician at several different gold, silver, mercury, and underground coal mines. Later he started a small mining and consultant business and manufactured and sold portable mining equipment from his store. He has prospected and mined gold in 11 western states and Venezuela. He is an experienced placer miner, gold dredger, and has worked at pocket mines in Oregon, California, Montana, and Idaho.

Bob Oblack joined the Clackamette Mineral & Gem Club in February 2006. This was the same time he retired from his 34-year career at Tektronix, the majority was in Sales and Marketing. Bob has an associate degree in Electrical Engineering and is proud to be called a science nerd. After retiring, Bob attended Dr. Bill Orr and Sheila Alfsen geology classes at Chemeketa Community College…to better understand the science that underlies our rockhounding hobby. Bob has been a rockhound ever since he was able to walk on the beach looking for agates. It’s “The Thrill of the Hunt” that drives his passion for rockhounding. He joined the North American Research Group (NARG) Fossil Club and the Fluorescent Mineral Society (FMS) to add breadth and depth to “The Thrill of the Hunt”. Before moving to Salem, Oregon in 2021, Bob spent many years living next to the Molalla River. With support from the Molalla Culture and Art Committee he created two videos. These videos discuss the Columbia River Basalt (CRB) flows and geologic points of interest within the Wild and Scenic Molalla River Corridor. They also trace the CRB flows from the Molalla River Corridor to the Pacific Ocean.

We celebrate the State Gem of Oregon, Oregon Sunstone. Technically, plagioclase feldspar containing microscopic copper inclusions.

Oregon State Gems Inc. has released the following new claims for sale:

OSG Group 108-119

Oregon State Gems is selling twelve - 20 acre placer sunstone claims. Options include

purchasing individual claims or any combination of the twelve.

Each individual claim is selling for $5,000, or $50,000 if purchasing all twelve. Please refer to Group 108-119 when discussing purchase.

These claims are located near a producing sunstone mine and there is easy access from a countyroad. The claims are 25 miles from Plush, Oregon and northeast of the Sunstone Public Area. OSG has found colored, water worn stones on these claims. These claims have potential, but are not proven.

By purchasing a sunstone claim from Oregon State Gems you are not only getting mineral rights to the Oregon State Gem (Sunstone) you also have the privilege to view Oregon’s Dark Sky Sanctuary, which is spectacular.

Silver as a factor of production in jewelry creation is a topic in the Sunstone community now. The spot price for one ounce of silver at the beginning of the year was $29.14 USD, and spiked to $78.38 USD yesterday (12-30-2025). Our River of Gems Show is our larger event, hosted on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the third weekend in April.
This event includes over 25 vendors, club display cases, a fluorescent exhibit, guest speakers, demonstrations, plus games for the kids.
Silent auctions take place daily, and on Sunday, we have our oral auction which benefits our scholarship fund.

The last Gem Faire of the year at Hillsboro did not dissapoint. B&S is a consistant vendor of Oregon Sunstones at the Hillsboro Gem Faire. They let us take pictures of their Oregon Sunstones for sale. see below.
